The court imposed a six-month suspended prison sentence on him, meaning he will not have to spend time in prison.

With the beginning of Lent, we are all called to focus on one of the spiritual aspects of the sex abuse crisis that underpins all the others: namely, the tragic failure to see.

Survivors of abuse and their advocacy organizations had expressed frustration with the lack of specific recommendations at the conclusion of the Vatican summit.

“We respect him and his office,” she told America. “But right now the issue of clergy sexual abuse is so much in the news, and the issue of covering up.” Cardinal Mahony, she said, is a “symbol of this.”

The recent Vatican summit on the protection of minors ended on Feb. 24. Since then many have asked, “What’s next?”
