A new study from The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that the actual number of people who died in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria is close to 5,000.

Police fired tear gas and pepper spray at thousands of U.S. citizens. The demonstrations received little news coverage. That is because the protests did not happen in Oklahoma or West Virginia but in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico was home to widespread poverty and on the verge of bankruptcy. And that was before Hurricane Maria.
