From Governor Andrew Cuomo's office:

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today designated March 12-18, 2012 as Timothy Cardinal Dolan Week in New York State. A formal proclamation issued by the Governor today paid tribute to Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, in honor of his elevation to the College of Cardinals. To commemorate the week, One World Trade Center will be lit red starting tonight and lasting through Sunday, March 18. Dolan

"It is an honor to designate Timothy Cardinal Dolan Week in New York," Governor Cuomo said.

"Cardinal Dolan has quickly become a beloved leader in our state and it is clear that he will continue to have a tremendous impact on the next generation of Catholicism in New York and throughout the United States."

In 2009, Cardinal Dolan was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as the tenth Archbishop of New York, replacing the retiring Edward Cardinal Egan. On February 18, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI elevated Cardinal Dolan to the College of Cardinals at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Cardinal Dolan also received the title of Arch-Priest of Nostra Signora di Guadalupe a Monte Mario. He is currently the President of the United States Conference of Bishops and his other posts include memberships on the Board of Trustees of the Catholic University of America, the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization, and the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

Cardinal Dolan was born on February 6, 1950, in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Saint Louis Preparatory Seminary and Cardinal Glennon College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. He completed a doctorate in American Church History at the Catholic University of America. He served as Vice-Rector of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary as well as a professor of theology at St. Louis University.

Official proclamations are used to honor individuals who make invaluable contributions to the well-being of New York, including those enriching the state through religious and spiritual work.

One World Trade Center is currently 1,208 feet, making it second largest in New York City. When completed, it will be the tallest building in the United States.

A copy of the proclamation will be available at www.governor.ny.gov.

It's amazing how so many of the comments are green with envy that the Governor (a liberal in belief and practice) is trying to reach out to the Cardinal. Is this just an anti-Bishop site? Or maybe the comments are from anti-Catholics pretending to be Catholic? But why so much hate? Where is the tolerance? Can't we all just get along?

David and Tim:
It's tiresome to read the same anti-Catholic bishops rhetoric in this blog. It depresses dialogue, intimidates participation, and diminishes the prospect for understanding the issue. The constables at America Magazine surely must also be concerned. Indeed, where is the tolerance and respect?

Leaving the building in red through St. Patirck's Day??? I would think the Cardinal would have preferred the green!

However, it's true that these remards here- mine included- are sometimes snippy...or playful. Whatever, I think it is ironic that our governor, of whose relationship the Cardinal would disapprove, is honoring him in this way. A "peace offering" and/or politics as always- who knows??? All in all, not a big deal, but an amusing sidebar to the other stories of religious/church/state conflict swirling about.

I thought it was like (on a big scale) the awards handed out in The Wizard of Oz and (on a smal scale) the plaque or pin you may hav egotten at work

I didn't realize membership in the Dolan Fan Club was necessary to being Catholic.

Picking up on Rober's comment, I kinda laughed at this news item as well-silly really.  Maybe like Michael Scott handing out a "Dundee" on The Office.

David,
We concur. I didn't think your comment was anti-Dolan. My comment referred to the drumbeat of bishop bashing (B2) on this blog. It doesn't add much to fruitful discussion of the issue. Surely there is something else to say about faith in the public square. Respectful dialogue on all subjects dignifies the subject, the writer, the reader, and invites greater participation. It's the essence of democracy.

''used to honor individuals who make invaluable contributions to the well-being of New York''

Okay, I'm going to need a little more information here. . . which ''contributions'' and how many are ''invaluable''?

Say it isn't so.

All politics all the time. Running back to the old days of deference.

And he has what for the civic life of the city or the state? So far, just made a fuss...

He looks good in red...maybe he's helping the fashion scene...

He avoided getting in the way too much last year when the opposition was working to pass a same-sex marriage law.  ''When [Republican leaders] kind of assured us [Dolan] it didn't have much of a chance… '', his leadership skipped Albany, and he went out of town.   That may have contributed to somebody's cause.    http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2012/03/cardinal-dolan-church-was-told-gay-marriage-wouldnt-pass
