Who said the Church was closed to the media? Yesterday a newspaper article was approved by the Vatican for inclusion in the Office of Readings, the prayer which begins the universal Church's daily liturgy.

True, the reading for November 4th has only been approved by the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments for the Diocese of Jaén, in Spain, because the article's author, proclaimed Blessed last year, has not yet been canonized.

But think what it opens up. Might blog posts, tweets, or YouTube videos one day be absorbed into the universal prayer of the Church?

The article is not exactly a breathless wartime report. It's a beautiful meditation by the Spanish journalist Manuel Lozano Garrido (1920-1971), known popularly as "Lolo". Oración ante una mano agujereada ("Prayer before a pierced hand") begins with the journalist taking down the crucifix above his bed because one of its nails has become loose. Lolo decides to take the other nails out and holds them in his hand, while asking a series of question of the Crucified Christ. While the theme is prayerful, the style is direct, clear and conversational -- definitely "journalistic" rather than "pious".

Lolo, who was beatified in June last year, wrote for various publications and agencies, including the Associated Press, which published his 'Prayer' on April 8, 1963. It was re-published by at least seven newspapers at that time --something impossible to imagine in this more sceptical age.

The journalist was no stranger to suffering: at the age of 22, he began to suffer from spondylitis, which over time crippled him; in 1962 he lost his sight. Yet his output was prodigious - -a legacy that includes countless articles, nine books and a magazine for sick people.

I can't find a translation of the 'Prayer', so here it is in Spanish. If someone finds a translation, please post it below. It's a great mediation for Good Friday.

It's beautiful, the last line in particular.  I love the image of Christ's spendthrift heart, spent so extravagantly, and of the sowing of seeds that will spread themselves out, and grow (even) under our feet.  Thank you for posting!

Karl Rahner, SJ had some beautiful reflections published in Die Presse - here's hoping some of those might make it into the Office one day.

Thanks so much, Father. To live a life in thanksgiving for even such pain as he sends us! Always in our darkness God sends these bright lights to help us. I hope someone can translate the prayer. I found a site w/ what seems to be a poor translation. I did,  however,  happen across this video @ Rome Reports:

Easter will not be postponed this year. It will not wait until the war is over. It is precisely now, in our darkest hour, that resurrection finds us.
