After the election of Pope Francis this week, I spoke with my friend David Golemboski, a doctoral student at Georgetown University's School of Government, who authored an article in the January 21-28, 2013 issue of America titled, "Sill 'Presente'? U.S. Catholics Should Reconnect with Latin America," about what the election of a Cardinal from Argentina might mean for renewed attention to the global south and for U.S. Catholics more specifically. We discussed his article, Pope Francis, and the subject of the waning attention of the U.S. Church since the 1980s and 1990s.
