Jim McDermottJanuary 11, 2011

Jon Stewart and his Daily Show are known at this point for their ability to reveal the contradictions in political spin and cable news speak, and to provide some catharsis in the midst of frustrating or bizarre social and political developments.  Usually they do it in a way intended to make the audience laugh.

But last night, Stewart put down the clown nose for the first ten minutes of the show to talk from the heart about the Tucson shooting. I found his comments a striking meditation on violence and conflict in our country, with a refreshing lack of finger pointing or combustion.

Check it out here.

This has all gotten way too confusing.  I'm going to pour myself one Jim-danday of a drink, put on my jammies, and go to bed!

Mercy!  I thought that we had established - with a great deal of heat and anger - that Jim McDermott is NOT a priest, but, rather JUST a seminarian!

I, however, think that Jim will be a good priest and I don't mind for one minute to promote him earlier than a bishop is willing to impart whatever upon him.

Not that it matters much, Jim, but as to Jim McDermott, S.J., I thought it was Jim Keane, S.J., instead who stated in another thread that he is not a priest. By the way, Jim, my father's name was also Jim, and I have a brother Jim who, at one time, was quite proficient at-no kidding- gymnastics. ;)

I hope you won't mind some (good-natured) "finger pointing,: Fr. McDermott, but it's "Tucson." :)

I sensed in Jon Stewart's reflection a personal challenge: to BE what you say you are, not just talk about it.

An immediate and permanent cease-fire would leave Hamas and its military capabilities in place in Gaza. In such a scenario, who will protect Israeli citizens from continued acts of terrorism?
