Archbishop Timothy DolanArchbishop Timothy Dolan of New York spoke to a packed bar in midtown Manhattan Monday evening for the city's first Theology on Tap lecture of the year. His topic of choice was the papacy, in honor of the feast of the Chair of Peter, and the talk was filled with a number of interesting and entertaining stories, jokes, quotes and bits of Catholic history and legend. The archbishop (at right--not in what he wore to the bar) even managed to fit in a little fact about the New York Yankees.

Now, I grew up in Massachusetts, which means that my team of choice is the Boston Red Sox. That said, my city of choice is New York, despite the fact that living here means that I must face a subway sometimes filled with people sporting Yankees and Mets gear. But despite the rivalry between the Yankees and the Sox, I've got to give the Yanks some credit after hearing Dolan's report of the team's donation to Catholic Relief Services: After the earthquake in Haiti, the club gave $250,000 to the charity. Not a bad choice for an evil empire.

We are advised that Archbishop Dolan gave up beer and cigars for Lent. How can anyone not possibly love this man?

There are so many things you can enjoy when you are poor—and some, it seems, that are easier to enjoy when you’re poor because you cannot lean on the crutches and the shortcuts that litter the path of the rich.
