Terry Gross, probably the best interviewer around (after Tim Reidy of course) interviews Ron Hansen about his new book "Exiles," on her NPR show "Fresh Air" today. (See post below "Two New Raves," about his new novel on Gerard Manley Hopkins and the writing of "The Wreck of the Deutschland.") Note the tagline on the website, which at least today identifies him as an SJ. Ron, a married deacon who teaches at Santa Clara University, says he is happy to have been named an honorary Jesuit. The Fresh Air interview was very well done. I had never heard of Ron Hansen before, but my ears perked up at the mention of Gerard Manley Hopkins. I know a priest who works in upstate New York and named his home Windhover after the Hopkins poem. Having read several other of his poems with great difficulty I have come to really appreciate his work. Hansen's interview and insights into Hopkins were really intriguing. Now I'm going to hunt down his earlier works for my summer reading list.

There are some signs of progress in addressing the questions raised in “Laudato Si’.” There are also intimations of backpedaling, particularly by the Trump administration, regarding the industrialized world’s malign effects on creation.
