U.S. Army chaplain Father Emil Joseph Kapaun was honored posthumously with the Medal of Honor for his bravery in the Korean War.

I have heard the story of Emil Kapaun since I was old enough to understand the concept of heroics. My mother grew up in the community of Pilsen, Ks, as did Fr Kapaun. All of the Czech families in that village were immigrants or the children of immigrants. They were, and still are deeply religious. Many of my cousins are active in maintaining the memorial that is located at the parish church in Pilsen. I was fortunate to attend the High School that bore the name of Fr Kapaun. For about 15 of those years, it was a Jesuit High School. His humility and piety have been a source of inspiration in my life. In this time of great national acrimony, it is a shame we don't have more men of great character who we can look up to. I hope to live long enough to see the day he is canonized.
