A Reflection for Thursday of the Second Week of Lent

“Thus says the LORD:
Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings,
who seeks his strength in flesh,
whose heart turns away from the LORD.” (Jer 17:5)

Today’s reading wastes no time in getting to its point. I think I will do the same. This passage calls us to trust God’s ways, and not trust human ways. Life will be better when we trust God. Life will be worse when we trust humans alone. There is not much more to be said than that.

Life will be better when we trust God. Life will be worse when we trust humans alone.

What are you giving up for Lent?

I’m not giving up anything. I’m not doing anything either for Lent. I don’t mean to scandalize anyone, but it's become a way to let go of me “making Lent happen” and just let Lent…happen to me.

Do you cheat on Sundays?

See above. Cheating is not possible!

Facts, as they say, are stubborn things. In defending abortion, some pro-choice activists can only ask women to ignore what their eyes evidently see.

An old teacher once said, “If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” She was right. An even older Jesuit once said, “If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly.” He was right, too.
