John GibbonsOctober 07, 2012

Though America only began publishing a special travel issue in 2009, travel writing has often found a place in the pages of the magazine. Here we offer four travel articles from our archives.

In "The Garden at Poperinghe" (pdf) from 1933 John Gibbons recounts his visit to a small Belgian town and his impressions of a gravesite for victims of the Great War.

In her dispatch from Rome (pdf), Augusta L. Francis describes her charming visit to Castelli Romani, a group of small towns situated at the foot of the Alban Hills.

Shortly after Fidel castro took power in Cuba, Eugene Culhane, S.J., offered this report: "Big Brother Comes to Cuba" (pdf).

In 1960 George H. Dunne wrote from a storied Italian city. The title says is all: "Venice:The Incomparable" (pdf).
