Good review, Tom.  It sounds like a fascinating book - also sounds like it might be similar to Cynthia Beourgeault's book about Mary Magdelen (I haven't read this book, just reviews).  I wonder if the same "reverse parodic slander" was at work in the interpretation of the Magdalen as a sinner/prostitute.  Beorgeault puts Mary Magdalen as a central figure in the Christ story.
