Cardinal O'Malley on Sen. Kennedy

Cardinal Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap, the Archbishop of Boston, has issued the following statement upon the death of Senator Ted. Kennedy.

"Today we mourn the passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy and we extend our heartfelt prayers and sincere condolences to his wife Victoria and their children, Kara, Edward, Patrick, Curran and Caroline. Senator Kennedy was blessed with a dedicated and loving family who stood by his side, particularly during the past year as he faced his illness with courage, dignity and strength.

We join with his colleagues in Congress and the people of Massachusetts in reflecting on his life and his commitment to public service. For nearly half a century, Senator Kennedy was often a champion for the poor, the less fortunate and those seeking a better life. Across Massachusetts and the nation, his legacy will be carried on through the lives of those he served.

We pray for the repose of his soul and that his family finds comfort and consolation in this difficult time."

I went to a 6:30 Mass this morning to pray for his final repentance that he may be forgiven for this constant support for abortion.  But if he did not repent, then I think he should not be given a Catholic burial in accordance with Church law just as abortion supporters are excluded from receiving Holy Communion during their life.

Sen. Kennedy was a towering and influential man.  Having been raised by Catholic parents (his mother was very devout), he had a prayer life and a big heart.  My most profound regret is that a man of his background and great influence would not tell his party they were wrong and use his significant power to stand up in defense of the most innocent, defenseless, and most discriminated against humans of our times: those in the womb. (Not to mention the grave evil abortion is.) He was the last of 11 children and his mother loved him and welcomed him like she did all of her children, as precious gifts from God.
