A brief excerpt, and then a link to the full text of, Father Adolfo Nicolas’s Homily at the Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, the day after his election as Jesuit Superior General. He began by noting that it was not a "message for the whole world," but instead "a simple homily." And then this excerpt, addressing those who had just elected him. "Yesterday after the election, after the first shock, there came the moment of fraternal aid. All of you have greeted me very affectionately, offering your support and help. One of you whispered to me: ’Don’t forget the poor!’ Perhaps this is the most important greeting of all, just as Paul turns to the wealthier churches of his time requesting aid for the poor of Jerusalem. Don’t forget the poor: These are our ’nations.’ These are the nations for whom salvation is still a dream, a wish. Perhaps it may be in their midst, but they don’t realize it." Perhaps it’s not surprising that Father Nicolas would ask the Jesuits to look to the poor, who have been such an important part of his own ministry during his Jesuit life. The full text of the homily is here, at Creighton’s GC 35 website: " Mass of Thanksgiving Homily " James Martin, SJ

There are some signs of progress in addressing the questions raised in “Laudato Si’.” There are also intimations of backpedaling, particularly by the Trump administration, regarding the industrialized world’s malign effects on creation.
