I have never written down anything about my prayer. Today I am going to buy a book that will contain what I write about prayer. I like that it will help me to trust and to remember and to focus. I especially like the idea that it is a freeing experience. Thanks for these good ideas.

I journal almost daily as part of my meditative style of praying. This past year as I realized my son was dying, I started journaling to ask for God's help in turning loose of my son and allowing God to take him home, to end his suffering - not wishing for his death, but kind of slowly grieving that he would no longer be with me. Going back after his death thraee months ago, immediately after his death, rereading my journal helped me heal further in the grieving process and helped me to remember what to be grateful about for Stephen's presence in my life. Little did I realize how comforting my prayer journal would be to me.

As we grapple with fragmentation, political polarization and rising distrust in institutions, a national embrace of volunteerism could go a long way toward healing what ails us as a society.
