Francis Murphy, C.Ss.R., taught Church history at the Accademia Alfonsiana in Rome. He collaborated in the preparation of the new Catholic Encyclopedia at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D. C. He wrote regularly for America during and after the Second Vatican Council.

As good theologians, those in attendance at the council will be impelled to get to the heart of the principal problems bothering Catholics and non-Catholics alike in the modern world.

Any attempt to evaluate all the accomplishments of the Second Vatican Council's first session would be not only presumptuous but also premature. Some things, however, may be profitably noted.
