The summer edition of LMU, the magazine of Loyola Marymount University, which I recently mentioned in conjunction with the Dana Gioia interview, contains another very good article to which I want to draw readers’ attention.

Matthew Fleischer, in “Techno Logic,” has nicely described the ways that LMU is discerning how to respond to the growth of online learning, including MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), online degrees, and all the challenges and thorny questions that accompany those programs, such as: What is a properly Catholic and Ignatian approach to online education? 

The whole article is well worth the read, and it draws out some varying and thoughtful perspectives in response to the question of technology and Ignatian identity. Overall, it appears LMU has modeled an intentional and thoughtful review process that may point the way for others in the Jesuit family.    

Matt Emerson's essays have appeared in a number of publications, including America, Commonweal, and the Wall Street Journal. The Catholic Press Association named his September 2012 essay "Help Their Unbelief," published in America, as the "best essay" in the category of national general interest magazine for 2012.
