On Tues. Nov. 4, the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a note clarifying some titles for the Virgin Mary—including one that has been the subject of much discussion over the last century, “co-redemptrix.” The document concludes, “Given the necessity of explaining Mary’s subordinate role to Christ in the work of Redemption, it would not be appropriate to use the title “Co-redemptrix” to define Mary’s cooperation.”

On “Inside the Vatican” this week, Vatican correspondents Gerard O’Connell and Colleen Dulle discuss the doctrinal statement. In the second half of the show, they look at St. John Henry Newman being named a doctor of the church and co-patron of Catholic education, examining Pope Leo XIV’s speeches during the recent Jubilee of the World of Education.
