In the winter edition of Notre Dame Magazine, Prof. Lawrence S. Cunningham, the John A. O’Brien Professor of Theology emeritus at Notre Dame, admits to holding “horrendously old-fashioned views” on what counts as a real bookstore, then edifyingly regales readers with an overview of why he eschews the e-reader. I found myself frequently nodding in agreement, even though I do read from time to time on my iPad.

One of my favorites? Reason number six: “a book never runs out of power, never requires an outlet or a cord.”

Prof. Cunningham’s is a great short essay with which to settle into the evening or begin the morning. Enjoy the entire piece!

Matt Emerson's essays have appeared in a number of publications, including AmericaCommonweal, and the Wall Street Journal. The Catholic Press Association named his September 2012 essay "Help Their Unbelief," published in America, as the "best essay" in the category of national general interest magazine for 2012. He is the author of the book Why Faith?
