Job Title: Assistant Editor for Digital Strategy
Company: America Media
Reports to: Senior Director of Digital Strategy
Status: Full-time, exempt
Location: Hybrid, New York City area
Salary Range: $60,000 – $75,000

About America Media: America Media interprets the church for the world and the world for the church. We are a forum for discussion of religion, society, politics and culture from a Catholic perspective. The Ignatian traditions of “finding God in all things” and the promotion of justice shape our commentary. Founded in 1909 by the Jesuit order and directed today by Jesuits and lay colleagues, America Media is a resource for social analysis and spiritual renewal, guided by the spirit of charity.

The Job: America seeks a full-time media professional with a knack for understanding and connecting with digital audiences. We’re not looking for the “social media person” (although you’ll spend a good amount of time there) as much as the someone who understands how to reach and engage audiences in the digital space—whatever the platform might be. You spend a lot of your time online. You know how to take an in-depth, nuanced, theological or political essay and make it accessible and attractive to the general reader. In short, we’re looking for someone to help us meet our readers right where they are in the digital realm: their inboxes, feeds, timelines and DMs.

The magazine-subscriber relationship used to be a lot simpler. An interested reader would send in a check, and an edited and curated review of the church and the world would show up weekly at their doorstep and be in their hands. No algorithms necessary. America still publishes a beautiful print magazine (monthly, now), but the game has greatly expanded.

Newsletters, YouTube, Spotify, TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, search engines, generative A.I. tools, Substack: the ideal candidate will have opinions about the pros and cons of publishing and distributing content in these platforms. They will also be eager to experiment with how content should be adapted for new platforms to reach new audiences.

Do you like hats? Because you’ll wear a few here. The ideal candidate will have a background in Catholicism (ministry or theology), publishing (writing and editing) and digital technology (software and platforms). The unicorn candidate will have experience in all three, or in two with an aptitude to learn the third.

But at the end of the day, this candidate will run the layer where America’s content meets its audiences—whatever platform that is.
