"Like Peter Claver, are we not called to see Christ in every face and to hear him in every voice," he said, "no matter what race or ethnic backgrounds those faces and voices may represent?"
"Catholic schools are facing a crisis at this very moment," the three bishops said. "Over 130 schools have already announced permanent closure. These closures are disproportionately harmful to low-income and Black children."
Amid the national tumult over racial injustice, there are high-level calls for the schools to teach more about the church’s past links to slavery and segregation, and how Black Catholics persevered nonetheless.
