Dear Friends of Xavier and America Media,
Greetings from the island of Weno, in the Chuuk Islands, in the Federated States of Micronesia.
This #GivingTuesday, America Media and Xavier High School of Micronesia are partnering to help provide a Jesuit education for this generation of Micronesians.
Xavier is a Catholic, Jesuit high school enrolling approximately 180 students in grades nine through twelve. The school has been operated by the Society of Jesus since 1952 and remains the only Jesuit school in the region—an area that covers three million square miles of ocean and countless Pacific Island languages and cultures.
Xavier draws students mainly from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau. These are some of the most remote nations in the world, and parts of them are extremely poor. According to the World Bank, close to 40 percent of people in the Federated States of Micronesia live below the global poverty line.
Our school motto, taken from the Gospel of John, is Ut Omnes Unum Sint: “That all may be one.” It’s an appropriate slogan for a place with so much diversity. This year, we’re asking you to be part of the rich tradition here in what is still “mission territory.”
Xavier High School of Micronesia may be in a distant corner of the world, but it is a shining light; a beacon of hope.
With your support on #GivingTuesday, America Media will be able to keep bringing you great content in print, on the web and in podcasts and video, telling the stories that matter most, while Xavier High School of Micronesia will be better suited to continue its mission to educate her students to become competent, conscientious and compassionate leaders whose lives are guided by the Christian call of service.

I am about to make my second journey to Xavier Micronesia to lead a retreat for their wonderful faculty and staff. This school and its mission are most deserving of your prayers and support. And the students, most of whom are poor, are fine young people hopeful for a successful future. We have a standing scholarship here at Le Moyne College for graduates of Xavier Micronesia and are proud of our affiliation with such a fine school.
