Let’s drink to the new saint !

How are the Jesuits celebrating the October 17th canonization of  soon to be Saint Mary MacKillop?  In addition to coverage in Eureka Street and an editorial in America magazine (18 October), the following new item from the Northern Argus, from Clare, South Australia, can be added:

Sevenhill celebrates Mary's canonisation
29 Sep, 2010 10:49 AM
A Clare Valley winery is commemorating its links to Blessed Mary MacKillop by releasing two celebratory wines to mark her canonisation as Australia’s first Saint next month. Sevenhill Cellars, established by the Jesuit Order in 1851, has been
appointed by the Mary MacKillop Foundation and the Sisters of Saint Joseph to produce the officially endorsed wines, a Shiraz and a Sauvignon Blanc, with proceeds supporting the Foundation. Blessed Mary’s connection with Sevenhill was established when her brothers, Donald and Peter, attended Sevenhill’s boarding college in the 1870s.
Donald went on to complete his initial training as a Jesuit at Sevenhill and later moved to the Northern Territory where he was
Superior of the Daly River Mission for several years. During her period of isolation from the church in 1871-1872, after her
invalid ex-communication for alleged insubordination, Mary and her Sisters found caring support and encouragement within the Jesuit community. It was during this period that she stayed at Weikert Cottage to be near her brothers and to make a retreat. The Mary MacKillop 2010 Sainthood wines, will be released in the first week of October.

This seems like such an Australian thing to do. Somewhat irreverent in substance, yet genuinely identifying with a daughter of Australia respected for what some Aussies perceive (and applaud) as her insubordination.

Somehow I can't imagine anyone in Quebec celebrating the canonization this weekend of their favorite son with release of the "Brother Andre Bessette 2010 Sainthood French Pastries." ;)

These vinos are probably NOT gonna be the house red or white for the composer of the rather bawdy establishment-slamming  ''Ballad of Mary McKillop'' currently circulating on Facebook.

Re: Andre Bessette patisseries, mais non! But don't be surprised to one day find a Bessette blend of blessed MAPLE SYRUP!

"We, the members of the Society of Jesus, continue to be lifted up in prayer, in lament, in protest at the death and destruction that continue to reign in Gaza and other territories in Israel/Palestine, spilling over into the surrounding countries of the Middle East."

While some children have been evacuated from conflict, more than 1.1 million children in Gaza and 3.7 million in Haiti have been left behind to face the rampaging adult world around them.

Easter will not be postponed this year. It will not wait until the war is over. It is precisely now, in our darkest hour, that resurrection finds us.

The paradox at the heart of Christianity is that we must die in order to live again. And few movies witness to that truth like “Romero” (1989).
