Catholic Book Club
The author of over 800 articles and more than a score of books, Cardinal Avery Dulles, S.J., is one of the church’s pre-eminent theologians, whose work is both faithful to tradition and engages the issues of society with clarity and intellectual rigor. For the past 20 years he has been the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University. In that role, he has delivered twice-annual lectures on topics that range from the religious to the secular, from ecclesiastical doctrine to social analysis.
Now, these lectures have been collected and presented in book form for a wide audience. In chronological fashion, they address the timely issues of the day with conviction, fidelity and a breadth of understanding. Topics include the new evangelization, religion and politics, priesthood and gender, inter-religious dialogue, the papacy, the death penalty, the Eucharist and evolution and atheism. And in all instances they reflect Dulles’s method of “listening and learning before speaking,” incorporating valid insights from all parties into the discussion (see “A Life in Theology,” America, April 21).
