Association of the Miraculous Medal
The Association of the Miraculous Medal (AMM) has retained Sterling Martin Associates to search for its next President & Chief Executive Officer. AMM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Perryville, MO, about 80 miles south of St. Louis. AMM invites its one million members to greater holiness through programs that attend to their pastoral and spiritual needs, provide formation in the Christian life, and involve them in the apostolate of charity, especially toward the clergy and the most abandoned. AMM is responsible for the operation of the National Shrine of the Miraculous Medal, the organization’s center of prayer. AMM includes nearly 65,000 “Promoters” who bring members to the organization.
Following an apparition by Mary to Catherine Labouré, a 24-year old member of the Daughters of Charity novitiate in Paris, the first Miraculous Medals were struck in 1832 and distributed throughout Paris. Shortly thereafter, an association to honor the Miraculous Medal was formed at the Motherhouse of the Congregation of the Mission in Paris. Gradually, other associations were established elsewhere in the world. In 1905, Pope Pius X recognized these associations and approved a global charter in 1909, and in 1918, the Association of the Miraculous Medal in North America was established by the Western Province of the Congregation of the Mission in the United States. AMM-North America has operated continuously since then under the auspices of the Western Province. Until September 2012, governance and management were provided by the Provincial Council.
Looking to the future of the Association, the organization recognized that a more structured governance model was needed: in September 2012, AMM was incorporated separately from that of the Western Province. The initial AMM Board of Directors was selected and currently includes seven members. The membership of the Board is made up of Vincentians, members of the Vincentian Family, and members of the Laity. The Provincial Superior serves as an ex officio member of the Board, and the Province continues to “own” the Association.
AMM’s $7.5 million budget is funded through a combination of sources of revenue – donations, memberships, Mass offerings, and income generated by the National Shrine. In FY 2012, the organization had 52 staff. The AMM Board of Directors has engaged Sterling Martin Associates as its search partner to recruit the Association’s first President & CEO under the new structure.
