JOBDESCRIPTION

 

The Church of the Incarnation Roman Catholic Community in Charlottesville, VA, seeks a Coordinator of Justice & Charity to begin on July 29, 2013.  This position oversees socialministry (socialjustice and direct service programs), creates and facilitates formation and education programs, and manages the justice & charity budget.

I.    GeneralInformation

 

A.      Status: MA-4 full-time position (Diocese of Richmond classification guide).

B.      Reports to: Pastor.

C.                                                                  Hours: 35 to 40 hours per week (fulltime); available during portions of regular parish office hours and for occasionalevening and weekend meetings/events; work schedule established by pastor and coordinator can be adjusted to maintain workflow.

 

II.        Primary Functions of the Position

 

A.      Empowers the parish community to fulfillthe church’s socialmission of justice, charity, and reconciliation. 

B.      Develops and leads opportunities for formation and education on Catholic socialteaching (CST) for adults, youth, and children.

C.      Plans, organizes, and directs programs covering a range of socialministry areas and containing reflection, advocacy, and action components. 

D.     Provides direct service for those seeking financialassistance, food, housing, and other basic needs and networks with community organizations to meet an array of needs.

 

III.Responsibilities and Tasks

 

A.      SocialJustice

1.      Promotes formation of the parish community in the socialteaching of the church through smallgroup programs (JustFaith, Lent 4.5, simplicity study group, etc.) and through community events (relevant speakers, Green Teamevents, bi-annualDays of Reflection, etc.), as wellas through the bulletin, newsletter, and other forms of communication.

2.      Promotes networking and ensures ongoing parish involvement with civic community service, ecumenicaland legislative groups, and other religious associations to lobby for socialchange (community organizing through IMPACT, legislative advocacy through the Virginia Catholic Conference, etc.). 

3.      Oversees and engages parishioners in globalsolidarity efforts (Haiti Twinning Program, immigration education and immersion, CRSRice Bowl, etc.).

 

B.      Direct Service/Charity

1.      Provides information, referrals and pre-counseling services to parishioners and other people in need; conducts crisis intervention when necessary.

2.      Maintains accurate, confidentialrecords concerning needs, referrals, and follow-up items.

3.      Assesses requests for and provides financialassistance according to outreach guidelines.

4.      Supports parish and community ministries that address a variety of needs (Food Ministry, Offender Aid & Restoration, Catholic Worker, PACEM, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, etc.).

 

C.      Parish Support/Formation

1.      Convenes the Justice & Charity Committee for planning, evaluation of ministries/programs, and receiving recommendations on new initiatives and budgeting priorities.

2.      Recruits, trains, and supports parishioners involved in socialministry.

3.      Collaborates with and coordinates among ministry leaders/teams that engage in socialministry by providing orientation, skills training, formation, and support.

4.      Collaborates with Worship, Christian Formation, and Youth Ministries to plan activities and disseminate information and materials on socialministry/CST.

5.      Analyzes socialissues in light of CST and motivates timely parishioner involvement in efforts for action, reflection, and transformation in response to local, national, or globalevents.

 

D.     Community Collaboration

1.      Fosters cooperation with the diocesan Office of Justice & Peace, utilizing diocesan resources and being responsive to diocesan activities and emphases. 

2.      Fosters ecumenicaland interfaith cooperation with localchurches and community organizations in socialministry efforts. 

3.      Attends continuing education events and community meetings as needed.

4.      Facilitates parishioner involvement in Diocesan socialministry events and activities.

 

E.      Finances/Administration

1.      Prepares and oversees annualbudget for area of responsibility and administers the expenditures and contributionsfor approved items.

2.      Analyzes revenue and programcost data to determine budget priorities.

3.      Orders, purchases, and distributes allprogramsupplies fromappropriate vendors.

4.      Directs publicity for programs and events.

5.      Maintains the accuracy of files and records.

 

F.      General

1.      Attends parish staff meetings and other meetings as needed.

2.      Reports to the PastoralCouncilon plans and activities as needed.

3.      Works with staff members and parishioners on specialparish events.

4.      Consults with and advises pastor on matters that affect the parish.

5.      Establishes and maintains contact with resources, programs, and people to facilitate the growth of new ideas.

6.      Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned.

 

IV.Education, Training, and/or Experience

 

A.   Qualifications

1.      Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; master’s degree desirable.

2.      Study of pastoralministry, theology, socialwork, or other socialsciences desirable.

3.      At least three years of professionalor volunteer experience in a ministerial, socialjustice, and/or human services setting required.

4.      Spanish proficiency desirable; willingness to learn required.

 

B.   Education and work history must reflect the following competencies.

1.      Catholic faith and an active commitment to the socialmission of the Church rooted in Catholic spirituality.

2.      A working knowledge of the Church’s socialteaching (CST).

3.      Leadership abilities in planning, administration, volunteer management, advocacy, and community organizing.

4.      Interpersonalskills in communication, education, collaboration, and group process.
